Kern’s says: Made from whole fruit from concentrate with other natural flavors

Abi says: For a long time, I’ve been in love with the “First 4 Ingredients” notation at Writers and Artists Snacking At Work. While reading the ingredients list on Kern’s Apricot Nectar, I was reminded of that writing tool and decided to use it to show you why this was a mistake of a beverage purchase.

First 4 ingredients:

Yes, this drink contains more High Fructose Corn Syrup than fruit. Ew. It only took one sip to make me realize that I’d chosen the worst ever possible accompaniment for my falafel. I was hoping for a sweet, refreshing alternative to my Mediterranean food and instead I got a tongue-coating nuclear orange nightmare.

Do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from Kern’s Apricot Nectar. Unless you enjoy drinking sugary orange-colored syrup masquerading a juice. If so, I’ve got just the drink for you.

I think the last time I had this was well before high fructose corn sweetener became vogue. I didn’t care for the “baby food slurry” texture of it. (But for the record, I actually like apricots in just about every other format.)

Thanks for the plug, Abi. We started the “First Four Ingredients” thing partially because we knew that’s where most of the “damage” is done - and that four was all that visitors would likely read with their short attention spans. But mostly we kept it to four because we were lazy. :)

If you’re looking for a beverage, I completely agree with the above comments. However, if you are looking for an alternative to powdered fiber this stuff is way better than Metamucil or Citrucel. I was advised by my mother that Kerns Apricot Nectar was prescribed to women in the 70’s for postpartum constipation for whom Prune Juice didn’t help. If nothing else works, this stuff will.
